What is a local citation?
A local citation is any online mention of a business's name, address and phone number (NAP), usually in a directory, map platform, social profile or industry listing. Consistent citations help search engines confirm that a business is real and located where it says it is.
Do citations still help local SEO?
Yes, but less than they used to. Accurate citations on the major platforms support trust and help other search engines and AI tools, while mass submissions to low-quality directories add little. Consistency matters more than volume.
Which UK citations matter most?
The UK citations that matter most are the map platforms and data sources that feed other services, followed by major directories and industry listings.

Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, your local business improvement district, borough council business directories, and community or sports organisations you support.
How do you fix inconsistent NAP details?
Fix inconsistent NAP details by choosing one exact format for your name, address and phone number, then updating every listing to match it, starting with the map platforms. Old addresses after a move and old phone numbers are the most common problems.
Should you pay for citation services?
Paid citation services save time for multi-location businesses. Most single-location businesses only need the twenty or so listings above, updated by hand once and checked yearly.
