What are Google Business Profile categories?
Google Business Profile categories are labels from Google's fixed list that describe what a business is, such as "Plumber", "Family law attorney" or "Cosmetic dentist". Every profile has one primary category and can add up to nine secondary categories. Categories decide which searches the profile can appear for and which features it gets, such as booking buttons or menus.
What is the difference between primary and secondary categories?
The primary category describes your core business and carries the most ranking weight, while secondary categories cover additional services you genuinely offer. A heating engineer might choose "Heating contractor" as primary and "Boiler supplier", "Plumber" and "Gas engineer" as secondary.
How do you choose the right primary category?
Choose the primary category that matches the search driving most of your revenue, and that the top-ranking competitors for that search use.
- Search your main service in Google Maps, from your location.
- Note the primary category shown under each of the top three businesses.
- Use a browser extension or the profile's page source to see their secondary categories.
- Pick the most specific category that is true for your business.
Which categories should common UK businesses use?
| Business | Typical primary | Useful secondaries |
|---|---|---|
| Family solicitor | Family law attorney | Divorce lawyer, Solicitor, Legal services |
| Conveyancer | Real estate attorney | Solicitor, Notary public |
| Plumber | Plumber | Heating contractor, Boiler supplier, Drainage service |
| Dentist | Dentist | Cosmetic dentist, Emergency dental service, Teeth whitening service |
| Accountant | Accountant | Tax preparation service, Bookkeeping service, Payroll service |
| Garage | Auto repair shop | Car inspection station, Tyre shop, Brake shop |
Google's category list changes over time, so always check what is currently available in your profile.
What are the most common category mistakes?
- Choosing a broad category ("Lawyer") when a specific one exists
- Adding categories for services you do not offer, which can trigger suspension
- Changing the primary category often, which can trigger re-verification
- Never reviewing categories after Google adds new ones
How quickly do category changes affect rankings?
Category changes usually affect Google Maps rankings within a few days to a few weeks. Track positions before and after so you can reverse a change that hurts.
