How to speed up a WordPress website: 12 fixes that work

Most slow WordPress sites have the same handful of causes. These fixes are ranked roughly by impact, starting with the ones that usually make the biggest difference.

Why is my WordPress website slow?

Most WordPress sites are slow because of heavy page builders, too many plugins, unoptimised images, weak hosting or misconfigured caching. Measure first with PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console, so you know which pages and metrics need work.

Which fixes speed up WordPress the most?

  1. Use good hosting. Cheap shared hosting with slow server response undermines everything else.
  2. Use one caching layer. Use your host's cache (LiteSpeed, server cache) or one plugin, not several stacked together.
  3. Compress and resize images. Convert to WebP or AVIF and serve images at the size they display.
  4. Preload the hero image and do not lazy-load it. This often fixes LCP on its own.
  5. Delete unused plugins. Deactivated plugins still clutter the site; deleted ones do not.
  6. Replace plugins that do one small job with a few lines of code or a built-in feature.
  7. Reduce page-builder weight. Turn off unused widgets and modules in Elementor or Divi, or rebuild key pages with the block editor.
  8. Host fonts locally and limit them to two families and the weights you use.
  9. Delay third-party scripts such as chat, heatmaps and social embeds until user interaction.
  10. Use a CDN such as Cloudflare for static files.
  11. Clean the database of old revisions, transients and spam comments.
  12. Update PHP to a currently supported version.

Does Elementor slow down WordPress?

Yes, Elementor adds extra CSS, JavaScript and markup compared with the block editor, which can slow pages, especially on mobile. Its performance settings and careful use of widgets reduce the impact.

When should you rebuild instead of optimising?

Rebuild a WordPress site when it relies on a heavy theme and page builder throughout, has years of plugin clutter, and still fails Core Web Vitals after the fixes above. A lightweight block theme or a static build can be cheaper than endless optimisation.
