What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown at the top of some search results, with links to the web pages used as sources. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience built on the same technology. Both are available in the UK.
How does Google choose sources for AI Overviews?
Google chooses AI Overview sources from pages already in its search index, using its normal ranking systems to find helpful, reliable content. Google has said there are no special technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet, so pages that rank well organically are the most likely to be cited.
How can you increase your chances of being cited?
- Answer questions directly. Start sections with a clear one- or two-sentence answer, then add detail.
- Use question-based headings that match how people search.
- Include specifics: prices, timescales, steps, local details and examples that generic content lacks.
- Show experience and expertise: named authors, credentials, case studies and first-hand detail.
- Keep your entity information consistent across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Add structured data that matches the visible content.
- Allow snippets. A nosnippet or restrictive max-snippet directive can stop content being used.
Can you opt out of AI Overviews?
You can limit how your content appears with the nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet controls, but these also limit normal search snippets. Blocking Google-Extended affects Gemini model training, not AI Overviews in Search.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
For many informational searches, yes, because some users get their answer without clicking. Commercial and local searches still drive clicks, and citation in an AI Overview builds visibility with the users who do click.
How do you track AI Overview visibility?
Track AI Overview visibility by checking a fixed list of target searches regularly and recording whether you are cited. AI Overview impressions and clicks are included in Search Console's performance report, but are not currently shown separately.
